Toshiba Unveils New SCiB™ Module Featuring Twice the Heat Dissipation for Electric Buses, Ships, and Stationary Applications

Toshiba Corporation has introduced a new SCiB™ battery module—an advanced lithium-ion solution tailored for use in electric buses, marine vessels, and stationary systems. This latest product incorporates an aluminum baseplate that offers roughly twice the heat dissipation capability of existing modules. It is scheduled for release starting mid-April 2025, both within Japan and in overseas markets.

As lithium-ion battery usage continues to expand across various sectors, there is a growing need for batteries that can endure frequent rapid charging and discharging cycles, particularly in demanding applications like electric buses and load-leveling systems for stationary installations. However, such high-power, short-duration operations produce significant heat, which can shorten battery lifespan. Battery manufacturers face the critical task of effectively managing thermal performance while ensuring high-power functionality within compact timeframes.

Toshiba’s SCiB™ rechargeable batteries employ a lithium titanate negative electrode, enabling them to deliver safe operation, exceptional cycle life, strong low-temperature performance, rapid charging, high power input and output, and a broad usable state of charge. These batteries are already utilized across a wide range of hybrid and industrial applications, including electric buses, cranes, railway systems, and automated guided vehicles used in logistics hubs. In addition to individual cells and battery packs, Toshiba also provides modular battery systems that can be interconnected in series or parallel configurations to meet varying voltage and capacity requirements.

Customers who use modular battery systems often seek a solution that balances high power output and input in a short time frame with long-term durability. To address this rising demand, Toshiba has developed a new module—the first in its class to incorporate an aluminum baseplate. Known for its superior thermal conductivity, aluminum allows the module to dissipate heat at approximately double the rate of conventional battery modules.
